The Cy-Tera supercomputer at The Cyprus Institute is the first national supercomputer facility open to all scientists in Cyprus, being in operation since May 2012. It operates following the model of other established European supercomputing centres and was funded through the infrastructure call of the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation and its operations are supported through the EU project LinkSCEEM-2 co-ordinated by The Cyprus Institute. It is important to note that the facility is of regional relevance being currently the largest available computational resource for academic research in the Eastern Mediterranean. It demonstrates the leadership role that Cyprus can play in the region and its potential of becoming an educational and research bridge between Eastern Mediterranean and the European Union. During the Cold War, U.S. and international monitoring agencies could spot nuclear tests and focused on measuring their sizes. Today, they're looking around the globe to pinpoint much smaller explosives tests. Under the sponsorship of the National Nuclear Security Administration's Office of Defense Nuclear Non-proliferation R&D, Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory have partnered to develop a 3D model of the Earth's mantle and crust called SALSA3D, or Sandia-Los Alamos 3D. The purpose of this model is to assist the US Air Force and the international Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in Vienna, Austria, more accurately locate all types of explosions. Hewlett-Packard has joined Nvidia's growing Grid alliance, equipping a Gen8 Proliant blade server with graphics boards that can speed up and lower the cost of virtual desktop deployments. Nvidia's Grid boards consist of multiple graphics processors and work with virtualization software from Citrix, Microsoft and VMware for quick delivery of desktop images and graphics to remote clients in a distributed computing environment.
