Supercomputers which run with server processors may soon witness a historical trend, if in case the benchmark tests carried out by researchers proves successful.The researchers of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) released a paper with the title "Are mobile processors ready for HPC?" Researchers of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics and the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology have achieved the wireless transmission of 40 Gbit/s at 240 GHz over a distance of one kilometer. Their most recent demonstration sets a new world record and ties in seamlessly with the capacity of optical fiber transmission. In the future, such radio links will be able to close gaps in providing broadband internet by supplementing the network in rural areas and places which are difficult to access. Read further...

AMD has unveiled a new family of low power server processors: the AMD Opteron X-Series optimized for scale-out server architectures. The first AMD Opteron X-Series processors, formerly known as "Kyoto", are the highest density, most power-efficient small core x86 processors ever built. The new X1150 and X2150 processors beat the top performing Intel Atom processor on key performance benchmarks, including single thread and throughput performance with superior power-efficiency, twice the cores and L2 cache with a more advanced pipeline architecture, higher integration and support for up to 32 gigabytes of DRAM - 4x more than the Intel Atom processor. China builds a supercomputer that will almost certainly lead the TOP500 of fastest supercomputers. The so-called Tianhe-2 will offer more than 30 petaflops of high performance computing power. The Tianhe-2, also known as the Milkyway-2 is the successor to the Tianhe-1A which was the fastest supercomputer in the world in 2010 with a high performance computing power of 2.507 petaflops. With 30.65 petaflops HPCP the new Chinese supercomputer will almost certainly become the fastest supercomputer in the list that opens later this month. Read further...
A team of researchers including members of the University of Chicago's Institute for Molecular Engineering highlight the power of emerging quantum technologies in two recent papers published in theProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences(PNAS). These technologies exploit quantum mechanics, the physics that dominates the atomic world, to perform disparate tasks such as nanoscale temperature measurement and processing quantum information with lasers.
