NASA has selected Dimension Technologies Inc. (DTI) for a phase I contract to investigate the adaptation of DTI's new high resolution glasses free 3D technology to cockpit displays. Previous studies by the US Air Force and others indicate the use of 3D displays can increase situation awareness and improve hazard avoidance in aircraft, helicopters, and potentially spacecraft. DTI's new 3D display technology avoids the heavy resolution loss associated with other 3D displays, allowing the creation of 3D images with as much resolution as the LCD on which they are displayed. Furthermore, DTI's displays can easily be made sunlight readable, since they do not use slit barriers or other light blocking elements. Read further...
iVEC and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) have selected SGI to provide the massive data management infrastructure at the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre. The centre is part of the Australian Government Super Science Initiative to support the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio astronomy facility. Read further...
Computer scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have set a supercomputing speed record that opens the way to the scientific exploration of complex planetary-scale systems. In a paper to be published in May, the joint team will announce a record-breaking simulation speed of 504 billion events per second on LLNL's Sequoia Blue Gene/Q supercomputer, dwarfing the previous record set in 2009 of 12.2 billion events per second. Macquarie Telecom, an Australian Managed Hosting and business-only telecommunications company, will host a research-dedicated supercomputer in its Intellicentre 2 data centre as part of a new deal with e-research services organisation Intersect Australia. Read further...
Imagine 100 million divers jumping into the ocean at once. Your task: Using high speed cameras, photograph the wake of each splash, then determine and plot exactly where each diver entered the water. That's somewhat analogous to what a group of Northern Illinois University (NIU) physicists were trying to accomplish earlier this year using a technique known as "speckle visibility spectroscopy" at Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source (APS).
