The Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS) takes another important step in the implementation of the Swiss high performance computing and networking (HPCN) initiative, which is co-ordinated by the ETH Board. A Cray XC30 supercomputer has been installed at CSCS and will become available to Swiss researchers in April. The next generation supercomputer has a peak performance of 750 Teraflops, which means that it can handle 750 trillion (750'000'000'000'000) mathematical operations in just one second. Following tradition CSCS has named the new supercomputer after a Swiss mountain, choosing "Piz Daint" this time, which is a prominent peak in Grisons that overlooks the Fuorn pass. Read further...
Like archeologists carefully digging for fossils, scientists with the Planck mission are sifting through cosmic clutter to find the most ancient light in the universe. The Planck space telescope has created the most precise sky map ever made of the oldest light known, harking back to the dawn of time. This light, called the cosmic microwave background, has traveled 13.8 billion years to reach us. It is so faint that Planck observes every point on the sky an average of 1,000 times to pick up its glow. Read further...
Total has selected the SGI ICE X High Performance Computing (HPC) system as the platform for its new supercomputer named "Pangea". Pangea provides the necessary data processing power for the identification of oil and gas reserves below the Earth's surface. The massive amount of data the system generates is managed by the SGI InfiniteStorage ecosystem and the SGI DMF tiered storage virtualization solution. Pangea is the largest commercial HPC system in the world, giving Total's in-house engineers and geologists an extremely powerful tool to enable the application of analytical and numerical models that support the development of three dimensional visualizations of underground geological formations, key to identifying potential deposits of oil and gas and to determining optimal extraction methods. The class of proteins that bind to membranes in the body is key to many of life’s vital functions. And not surprisingly, more than half of all modern medicinal drugs are directed at manipulating those proteins. Getting a good grasp of the structure and function of membrane proteins has posed a persistent challenge to the field of structural biology. Yet, successes in the quest are essential to the advancement of biomedical research, including understanding the conformational, or structural, changes proteins undergo when they move from the cell fluid and anchor to the cell membranes.
