The VSB-Technical University of Ostrava and Bull signed a contract for the supply of a bullx supercomputer, which represents the first step in the creation of the Ostrava-based national supercomputing centre. The system, code-named "small cluster", will be delivered at the end of March 2013 and will be available for production starting in May. With this system, Czech science and industry will have at their disposal a machine with a theoretical peak performance of 82.54 TFLOPS by this spring. It will help advance development in areas such as nanotechnology, engineering and the transportation industry. Read further...
PRACE awarded time on 6 Tier-0 HPC systems to 57 research projects, some of which have been allocated record amounts of core hours or have significant links to the most ambitious current European scientific efforts. One project feeds into the EU FET (Future & Emerging Technologies) Flagship "Graphene", two others are linked to ERC (European Research Council) grants and an additional one to the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). Three awards were made to projects led by industrial researchers and a further two included collaborators from industry. Read further...
A revolutionary liquid-cooled computer server that could slash the carbon footprint of the internet is being tested at the University of Leeds. While most computers use air to cool their electronics, all of the components in the new server are completely immersed in liquid. The power-hungry fans of traditional computing are replaced by a silent next-generation liquid cooling process that relies on the natural convection of heat. But the significance of the new Iceotope server lies less in the novelty of its design than in the bite it could take out of the huge electricity demands of the internet servers that form the fabric of our on-line lives.
