Exascale supercomputing

Indiana University's Center for Research in Extreme Scale Technologies (CREST) is the recipient of a three-year, $1.1 million grant from the Department of Energy (DOE) to develop software that improves the speed and programmability of supercomputers. This funding is part of a $7.05 million grant for the XPRESS (eXascale PRogramming Environment and System Software) project, led by Sandia National Laboratories as part of the DOE Office of Science Advanced Scientific Computing Research X-Stack programme. Simulations boost the significance of image and measurement data from space missions: based on the example of an asteroid, Bernese astrophysicist Martin Jutzi shows how collisions with other celestial bodies can be reconstructed and that even the internal structure of so-called protoplanets can be described. Scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory and other labs have demonstrated a process whereby quantum dots can self-assemble at optimal locations in nanowires, a breakthrough that could improve solar cells, quantum computing, and lighting devices. The future of keeping ageing-related diseases at bay lies with the supercomputer according to scientists from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology at the University of Sydney. The research, led by Professor Leo Radom from the University's School of Chemistry, and Dr. Amir Karton, University of Western Australia, has used sophisticated quantum chemistry and powerful supercomputers to design improved antioxidants which will help stave off ageing-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. Their work was recently published in theJournal of the American Chemical Society, and is featured in a current edition of the prestigious scientific journal,Nature Chemistry. Read further...
Titan, the world's fastest supercomputer, capable of more than 20,000,000 billion calculations per second, will soon devote substantial time to solving problems first posed by a professor at West Virginia University (WVU). One million computational hours, the equivalent of 110 computers running simultaneously, non-stop for a year, have been devoted to James P. Lewis, an associate professor of physics at WVU and his research group to design new materials that are key in developing solar power. Read further...
