With the introduction of some new programme elements and sessions as single tracks in the 2013 programme, the International Supercomputing Conference will offer attendees the most comprehensive four-day technical programme in the 28 years of the conference. Unlike the past few conferences, at ISC'13 the expected 2,500 attendees will not to have to choose between competing sessions in the brand-new Industry Track, which will run as a series of single sessions, parallel to the current conference track - formerly known as the official conference programme, on Tuesday, June 18, and Wednesday, June 19. ISC'13 - the largest HPC conference and networking event in Europe for scientists, researchers and vendors within the high-performance community - will be held for the first time in the historic German city of Leipzig from June 16-20. A major new GBP30 million government investment was announced, 1 February 2013, by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rt. Hon George Osborne, as he visited the Science and Technology Facilities Council's Daresbury Laboratory. The investment, part of the GBP600 million announced in the 2012 Autumn Statement, is designed to firmly establish the UK as the world leader in energy efficient supercomputer software development to meet big data challenges. Economy-boosting partnerships between research and industry are just some of the benefits poised to come from investment that will confirm the UK as an expert in the development of energy efficient super-technologies and software. Over 120 delegates from industry and research institutions came together on 29 and 30 January 2013 at STFC's Hartree Centre to explore how high performance computing (HPC) enhances product and service innovation. The event, HPC as a Service for Industry, was the first in a series of workshops focused on providing current and prospective HPC users in sectors as varied as health care, materials chemistry and engineering, with information regarding the collaboration opportunities and world class resources available to them. Mazda Motor Corporation has modernized and consolidated its Mazda Digital Innovation (MDI) system on Oracle's SPARC T4-4 and T4-2 servers running Oracle Solaris 10. Mellanox Technologies has made available new RDMA InfiniBand and Ethernet long-haul interconnect solutions as part of the company's MetroX product line. MetroX products enable long-reach, high-throughput RDMA connectivity within and between data centres across multiple geographically distributed sites.
