Collaboration between the Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre (NBIC) and the e-BioGrid team resulted in a new service: NBIC Galaxy on Cloud. The migration of Galaxy to the Cloud allows end-users - bioinformaticians, biologists or clinical researchers - to run their Galaxy tools and work flows on the BiG Grid High Performance Computing (HPC) Cloud at SARA. The Dutch Cloud version of Galaxy enables processing of big data volumes and the high speed network connection provides rapid data transfers.The application scales dynamically with increasing workload. This is an open call for a prospective PhD student to propose a novel and exciting project to develop new methods in Extreme Citizen Science, or which addresses a particularly interesting or unusual problem. ExCiteS is looking for applicants who have research proposals that fall within and complement the aims and objectives. You should be able to provide a clear research idea that will contribute to or extend ExCiteS activities, but which will be theoretically sophisticated and methodologically novel. Your research proposal needs to explain what your contribution will be, the methods that you will use, an estimation of further support - beyond the studentship - that you will need to complete your studies, a timeline of key activities and also show how your work could complement the vision and other activities of the group. The scholarship covers UCL tuition fees and provides a stipend of GBP 15,590 per annum tax free. Travel expenses and research equipment will be provided to the successful candidate. Bioinformaticians at IMIM - Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute - and UPF - Pompeu Fabra University - have used molecular simulation techniques to explain a specific step in the maturation of the HIV virions, i.e., how newly formed inert virus particles become infectious, which is essential in understanding how the virus replicates. Engys' staff, based in five worldwide locations, can now access significant processing power via a new server cluster to support their Computational Fluid Dynamic [CFD], Multi-Disciplinary Optimisation [MDO] and Adjoint CFD custom software development, design optimisation and project consultancy work. Engys also uses OCF's Compute-on-Demand facility, enCORE, both for extra processing power when required and to host engineering software, which it provides as a service to its own customers. New research has demonstrated a way to make bismuth electrons and nuclei work together as qubits in a quantum computer.
