Researchers of NLeSC's eSALSA project, led by NLeSC integrator Prof. Henk Dijkstra, IMAU, Utrecht University, have been granted access to two of the largest supercomputer systems in the United States. In collaboration with Dr. Shantenu Jha of Rutgers University in New Jersey, members of the eSALSA team - Jason Maassen, Ben van Werkhoven, and Frank Seinstra - will use the supercomputers for extreme high-resolution climate simulations in which the Atlantic Ocean Circulation (the Gulf Stream) is changed by a strong freshwater perturbation caused by melting of the Greenland ice sheet. The study will provide a deeper understanding of the effect of ocean circulation changes on regional climate changes. Read further...

Cray Inc. has completed the previously announced transaction to acquire Appro International Inc. The aggregate merger consideration paid by Cray was approximately $21.8 million in cash, which reflects approximately $3.2 million in deductions from the previously-announced $25 million purchase price - for certain transaction expenses paid and working capital adjustments - that were made in connection with the acquisition. The agreement was previously announced on November 9, 2012. Read further...
Univa, a data centre automation company, has released Univa Grid Engine 8.1.3 with native integration support of Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. By adding native integration support for Univa Grid Engine 8.1.3, it enables the management and scheduling of applications onto Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. This move further widens the gap between open source versions of Grid Engine and Univa's quality controlled, commercial, and fully supported software. Read further...
It's likely that fellow users on your favourite supercomputer have widely varying needs. The applications, compilers, and libraries that you need are probably different from the ones other users need. That is where modern environment module systems come in. A good module system "sets the table" for users by loading the packages each user needs. The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) has developed an innovative module system that addresses some unique challenges facing modern computing centres. Read further...
Supercomputer simulations have revealed that a type of oddly dim, exploding star is probably a class of duds - one that could nonetheless throw new light on the mysterious nature of dark energy. Most of the thousands of exploding stars classified as type Ia supernovae look similar, which is why astrophysicists use them as accurate cosmic distance indicators. They have shown that the expansion of the universe is accelerating under the influence of an unknown force now called dark energy; yet approximately 20 type Ia supernovae look peculiar. Read further...
The University of Texas at Austin team, mentored by staff of the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), won the seventh annual Student Cluster Competition (SCC) this year at the Supercomputing '12 (SC12) conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. SC12 has been the seminal international conference for high-performance computing (HPC) for the past 24 years. Read further...
