The Cloud

Japanese Internet provider Sakura Internet has selected Mellanox InfiniBand technology for its new Cloud hosting infrastructure. Sakura Internet utilizes Mellanox InfiniBand as the single interconnect solution for both compute and storage, instead of 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel. Sakura reduced their capital and operational costs thanks to InfiniBand cost / performance benefits, enabling Sakura to bring an economy of scale to Japanese IT. In addition, InfiniBand has enabled Sakura Internet to increase their Cloud hosting scalability and handle the increased number of services they offer to their users. Read further...
The EU-initiative, BonFIRE, is opening its multi-site Cloud infrastructure to researchers from industry and academia and SMEs from November 1st 2012, for testing and experimentation of Cloud-based applications and services. ARM has launched the new ARM Cortex-A50 processor series based upon the ARMv8 architecture. The series initially includes the Cortex-A53 and Cortex-A57 processors and introduces a new, energy-efficient 64-bit processing technology, as well as extending existing 32-bit processing. IBM scientists have demonstrated a new approach to carbon nanotechnology that opens up the path for commercial fabrication of dramatically smaller, faster and more powerful computer chips. For the first time, more than ten thousand working transistors made of nano-sized tubes of carbon have been precisely placed and tested in a single chip using standard semiconductor processes. The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory launched a new era of scientific supercomputing today with Titan, a system capable of churning through more than 20,000 trillion calculations each second - or 20 petaflops - by employing a family of processors called graphic processing units first created for computer gaming. Titan will be 10 times more powerful than ORNL's last world-leading system, Jaguar, while overcoming power and space limitations inherent in the previous generation of high-performance computers.
