The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Contrail consortium announced Contrail PaaS (ConPaaS) release 1.0. ConPaaS simplifies the way applications can be started and managed in the Cloud. Until ConPaaS, considerable system administrator skills were needed to deploy applications in the Cloud. Two years ago, the Contrail project set out to tackle a number of these very hard to handle problems. Cray Inc. has launched the company's new series of production hybrid supercomputers - the Cray XK7 system - in conjunction with the debut of the Cray XK7 supercomputer nicknamed "Titan" located at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). CSC's North American Public Sector has deployed Crossroads Systems' ReadVerify Appliance (RVA) for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to monitor archived environmental data stored on tape. This work is under the NOAA Research and Development High Performance Computing System contract that CSC won in 2010 to build a supercomputer for modelling weathering patterns. The $317 million contract is an indefinite-delivery, indefinite quantity contract that has a four-year base period, one four-year option and one-year transition option. Read further...

Victor Jongeneel, director of the High-Performance Biological Computing (HPCBio) programme and affiliate of the Institute for Genomic Biology and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, is a key participant in a grant awarded by the Human Heredity and Health in Africa Initiative, or H3Africa, to establish a pan-continental bioinformatics network to aid research. Founded in June 2010, H3Africa is a joint initiative of the African Society of Human Genetics, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Wellcome Trust, a UK based charity organisation, to "study genetic diversity in health and disease in African populations". The grant will dispense approximately $2 million dollars per year for five years to cover travel, training, and technical support. Read further...
