In a key step toward creating a working quantum computer, Princeton researchers have developed a method that may allow the quick and reliable transfer of quantum information throughout a computing device. The finding, by a team led by Princeton physicist Jason Petta, could eventually allow engineers to build quantum computers consisting of millions of quantum bits, or qubits. So far, quantum researchers have only been able to manipulate small numbers of qubits, not enough for a practical machine. Read further...

Dell's core server, storage and networking infrastructure elements enable scaled-out solutions to be built from standard hardware building blocks and innovative software solutions. Read further...
Spectroscopic observations of distant galaxies taken with the 10-meter telescopes at the W. M. Keck Observatory on Hawaii, when combined with images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope plus supercomputer simulations to help interpret the observations, together reveal a major surprise: that a standard assumption about the evolution of galaxies is not correct. Astronomers had thought that disk galaxies - like our own Milky Way - had largely finished forming by about 8 billion years ago, as indicated by the rates at which stars are formed in the Universe. Therefore, many astronomers have assumed that distant, much younger disk galaxies are not all that different from nearby ones. Read further...

Nano-ribbons of silicon configured so the atoms resemble chicken wire could hold the key to ultrahigh density data storage and information processing systems of the future. This was a key finding of a team of scientists led by Paul Snijders of the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The researchers used scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to validate first principle calculations - or models - that for years had predicted this outcome. The discovery, detailed inNew Journal of Physics, validates this theory and could move scientists closer to their long-term goal of cost-effectively creating magnetism in non-magnetic materials. A new IBM Blue Gene/Q system, funded by a $2.65 million NSF grant, has been installed at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Supercomputing Center. The system, comprised of a powerful IBM Blue Gene/Q supercomputer, was recently installed at the Rensselaer Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations (CCNI). Between its 200 teraflops of computational power, exceptionally low energy consumption, and ability to help researchers tackle critical challenges ranging from advanced manufacturing to cancer screening, the new system seemingly has it all. Everything but a name, that is. Read further...
