VMware Inc., a global expert in virtualization and Cloud infrastructure, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Nicira Inc., a pioneer in software-defined networking (SDN) and a specialist in network virtualization for open source initiatives. Read further...
EMC Corporation has achieved strong adoption of its EMC Captiva Cloud Toolkit. The toolkit transforms web-based scanning by providing a simple way for developers to add scanning functionality to web applications, enabling scanning from all document scanners and multifunction peripherals (MFP) that support the ISIS and TWAIN standards. Read further...
Oracle has launched Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Software 2.0. Customers in 43 countries across 22 industries have already adopted Oracle Exalogic. Exalogic is the fastest growing Oracle engineered system with 3x Y/Y sales bookings based on the last two quarters of FY 2012. To date, 40% of Oracle Exalogic's growth comes from customers who have chosen Exalogic over competing solutions from IBM, including mainframes. Read further...
HP has introduced new offerings that improve visibility into the relationship between software and physical, virtual and Cloud IT infrastructure, enabling organisations to reduce complexity and take control of their IT processes and services. Read further...
As worldwide data volumes continue to explode exponentially, data centre architects are driven towards faster networking technologies drawn from the supercomputer world to keep apace. Obsidian Strategics' IP portfolio providing the only means of extending such networks between data centres throughout the world has recently been awarded patent protection in two more jurisdictions Russia and Canada. Read further...
Droughts are more than simply climate phenomena. They can have profound social, environmental, and economic impacts and can also be a major threat to food security throughout the world. Though much progress has been made in monitoring droughts and understanding their causes, there is still a strong need for better precision in both the monitoring and forecasting of droughts. A team lead by Arizona State University (ASU) researchers seeks to enable the move from a reactive to a more pro-active approach to droughts by developing new capabilities to conduct global drought monitoring using satellite detection of water stress and hydrologic models applied at regional scales. Professor Stephen Hawking has launched the most powerful shared-memory supercomputer in Europe. Professor Hawking anticipates that the COSMOS supercomputer, manufactured by SGI and the first system of its kind, will open up new windows on our Universe. Read further...
The newly introduced SuperMUC at Leibniz Supercomputing Centre, one of the most energy-efficient x86-only systems in the world, uses 324 terabytes of 30 nanometer (nm) class Samsung Green DDR3 memory to take full advantage of industry-proven, highly reliable Samsung memory technology. Read further...
Researchers at the US National Physical Laboratory (NPL) have demonstrated for the first time a monolithic 3D ion microtrap array which could be scaled up to handle several tens of ion-based quantum bits (qubits). The research, published inNature Nanotechnology, shows how it is possible to realise this device embedded in a semiconductor chip, and demonstrates the device's ability to confine individual ions at the nanoscale. The Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) added the 500th unique IP network to the exchange. Never before has AMS-IX or any other Internet exchange interconnected this many networks. Read further...
The Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), one of the largest Internet Exchanges in the world, has selected ADVA Optical Networking's 100G Metro solution as a key part of a new core network infrastructure. Connecting data centre locations throughout Amsterdam, the 100G Metro solution will double AMS-IX's current network capacity ensuring that it can meet fierce bandwidth growth and its customers' expectations. Read further...
Telefonica has successfully trialed a new automated multi-layer network in northern Germany. Built upon the ADVA FSP 3000 and Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers, the new network uses ROADM technology, RAYcontrol GMPLS control plane software and multi-layer configuration mechanisms developed in the IST project ONE, funded by the European Union. During the course of the trial, Telefonica I+D, ADVA Optical Networking and Juniper Networks collaborated with European universities to enable multi-layer restoration and automated DWDM service provisioning between IP/MPLS routers. The trial enabled Telefonica to verify the significant potential for reduced operational and capital expenditures while driving new levels of speed and efficiency. Read further...
The sixth edition of the MULTIPROG workshop will be held in conjunction with the 8th International Conference on High-Performance and Embedded Architectures and Compilers (HiPEAC) in Berlin, Germany, January 21-23, 2013. Deadline for paper abstract submission is October 8, 2012. Read further...
Key software used to study gene expression now runs four times faster, thanks to performance improvements put in place by a team from the Indiana University (IU) Pervasive Technology Institute (PTI), the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and Technische Universität Dresden. Read further...

Intersect, a not-for-profit eResearch services and solutions organisation, has selected SGI to provide new high performance computing (HPC) infrastructure to further research in New South Wales (NSW). Read further...
A Cleveland Clinic research team is developing virtual models of human knee joints to better understand how tissues and their individual cells react to heavy loads - virtual models that someday can be used to understand damage mechanisms caused by the aging process or by debilitating diseases, such as osteo-arthritis. Read further...
The Victoria University of Wellington, on behalf of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) Consortium, has selected IBM systems technology to help scientists probe the origins of the universe. Read further...
MSC Software Corp., an expert in multi-discipline simulation software solutions, has released a GPU-accelerated version of the Marc 2012 Finite Element Analysis application, which speeds up a range of engineering simulations. Read further...
The earth and environmental sciences have become especially data-intensive. As researchers rely on highly calibrated and technologically sophisticated sensors rather than observations to collect data, discovering, integrating and analyzing massive amounts of heterogeneous information become critical to researchers' ability to address complex questions about the environment and the role of human beings in it. The research and education community in Zambia joined UbuntuNet Alliance's global counterparts on Tuesday, 17th July 2012 when a team of Engineers from ZAMREN, ZESCO, the Zambian power utility company, TENET and CEC-Liquid Telecom completed installing a cross-border link between TENET and ZAMREN. With an initial capacity of 1 STM-1 (155Mbps) between the ZAMREN Network Operating Center (NOC) at the University of Zambia in Lusaka and the TENET node in Johannesburg, the link, going via Zimbabwe, forms the first research and education cross-border link in Africa. The circuit is extended to the UbuntuNet Router in Mtunzini via the SANReN network in South Africa then uses capacity made available by TENET on the SEACOM submarine cable as onward connection to the UbuntuNet Routing Hub in London, which further connects to GEANT - "at the heart of global research networking". These days, we do everything on the web. We bank, shop, flirt... so why not conduct science on the web, too? Web-based science has been an aspiration of researchers and research funding organisations for more than two decades. Currently, it is a driving force behind the National Science Foundation's (NSF) $121 million investment in cyberinfrastructure through the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), and a leading factor in the creation of the iPlant Collaborative, a $50 million effort to facilitate research in plant genetics.
