Exascale supercomputing

ASTRON, the Dutcch Institute for Radio Astronomy and IBM have signed an initial 32.9 million euro, five-year collaboration to research extremely fast, but low-power exascale computer systems targeted for the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The SKA is an international consortium to build the world's largest and most sensitive radio telescope. Scientists estimate that the processing power required to operate the telescope will be equal to several millions of today's fastest computers. Read further...

Seniors in aged care facilities now have access to better round-the-clock care, thanks to a pioneering project being staged at Hunter Urban Medicare Local (HUML) in New South Wales. This project aims to improve the decision-making resources available to residential aged care and hostel staff. It relies on Odyssey CareAssess, a technology developed by Avia Health Informatics and migrated to the Cloud in partnership with Melbourne-based Cloud services company, Australian Cloud. A summer school will be organised around the topics of traditional Grids, Desktop Grids and Clouds, July 2-6, 2012. Three current FP7 projects organize this summer school to show various aspects of user support for the European Grid and Cloud infrastructures. The summer school will be held in Budapest and the organizers are looking for application and work flow developers, science gateway developers, system administrators and staff members of companies who would like to establish company level DCI (Clouds, Grids, Desktop Grids) and utilize this DCI or other commercial Clouds via a high-level gateway service. Fujitsu has completed construction of the new supercomputer, nicknamed Oakleaf-FX, for the Supercomputing Division of the University of Tokyo's Information Technology Center (SCD/ITC). The new system will begin operations from April 2, 2012. The new Oakleaf-FX system, which employs Fujitsu's PRIMEHPC FX10 supercomputer, is one of the few petaflops-class systems in the world and achieves high energy efficiency, as low as 1.4MW for overall system power consumption. The Research Institute for Information Technology at Kyushu University has placed orders for a new system, consisting of a Supercomputer System and High-performance Computational Server System. The Supercomputer System will use a configuration of Fujitsu's PRIMEHPC FX10 nodes, and the High-performance Computational Server System will employ a cluster configuration of PRIMERGY CX400 x86 servers. Combined, both systems will achieve a total theoretical peak performance of 691.7 teraflops, making the new supercomputer system the largest-scale system in the Kyushu region of Japan.
