Univa, released the results of its Technical Computing User Survey, taken between October and December, 2011. The survey shows the continuing dependence on High Performance Computing across all industries with 7 out of 10 respondents indicating an expected increase in use in the coming year, and 7.5 out of 10 respondents indicating an increase in use in the following year. The Netherlands eScience Center (NLeSC by SURF & NWO), operational since July 2011, allocates 5,5 million euro to begin its first set of eScience projects. NLeSC collaborates with scientific research groups from both academia and industry to conduct eScience projects in the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, balancing short-term eScience results and the development of a longer-term eScience strategy. The future development of computer science depends on researchers' ability to conduct consistent, controlled, and repeatable large-scale experiments in large-scale, distributed computing and networking. To tackle this challenge, the FutureGrid project, a partnership among Indiana University and national and international partners, helped host the Workshop on Experimental Support for Computer Science during the SC11 conference in November 2011. ScaleMP has made available vSMP Foundation with support for the Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 family, code-named "Sandy Bridge". Several deployments of vSMP Foundation for Intel's newest processor family have already been in production for several months. The largest site of vSMP Foundation running on Intel Xeon E5-2600 processor family is the San Diego Supercomputer Center's (SDSC). SDSC's Gordon, a unique data-intensive supercomputer, is using 1,024 dual-socket Intel Xeon E5 processor nodes, each with 64 GB DDR3 1333 MHz memory to create 32 virtual-SMPs, each with 512 cores and 2 TB of RAM. Professor Michael Regenwtter and Doctoral Student Chris Zwilling from the Department of Psychology at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, working with the Institute for Computing in Humanities, Arts and Social Science (I-CHASS) and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), were awarded a 30,000 Service Units (SU) start-up allocation grant on the Blacklight supercomputer at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. Blacklight is part of the National Science Foundation's Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), a national collaboration of computing infrastructure.
