FERMI is the new supercomputing system in CINECA, the Italian supercomputing centre. This new system, based on IBM BG/Q architecture, will replace the IBM SP6 supercomputer and will be installed this Spring and becoming fully operational in August 2012. Read further...
SGI is continuing working toward exascale computing with the integration of the Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 family into all of its high performance compute (HPC) server and storage platforms and product families. Massey University's department of Theoretical Chemistry and Physics is now using Bright Cluster Manager to manage their powerful HPC system. The department switched from Rocks and other open source toolkits to Bright as they expand their cluster for immediate needs, and as they plan their future hardware evolution. As a result of this change, Massey University realized immediate gains in operational efficiency and reduced system management workloads. SURFnet has completed a technology test of Cisco's 100G DWDM solution between the National Supercomputing Center, SARA, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, using the Cisco ONS 15454 M6 Multiservice Transport Platform. The Cisco system uses dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) to unite multiple optical carrier signals on a single optical fiber, leading to several benefits including increased fiber capacity.
