Computing technologies continue allowing for more powerful devices, but application requirements are growing faster, so more research is needed. The European Commission is aware of this and has been substantially increasing the research funding for computing since 2004. The High-Performance and Embedded Architectures and Compilers Network (HiPEAC) was created in 2004 as a means to organize the computing systems community in Europe. The HiPEAC network currently represents more than 1000 active researchers in computing systems in Europe and it is the biggest and most visible such network in Europe. Read further...
An international team of scientists has demonstrated a revolutionary new way of magnetic recording which will allow information to be processed hundreds of times faster than by current hard drive technology. The researchers found they could record information using only heat - a previously unimaginable scenario. They believe this discovery will not only make future magnetic recording devices faster, but more energy-efficient too. Read further...
Researchers at the Nano-Science Center at the University of Copenhagen have developed a new nano-technology platform for the development of molecule-based electronic components using the wonder material graphene. At the same time, they have solved a problem that has challenged researchers from around world for ten years. Read further...

The Advanced Systems Engineering and Integration Division of ARINC Engineering Services is offering an expanded supercomputing capability at its Annapolis, Maryland headquarters. A new Linux-based supercomputer has been installed and is now available to support a wide range of engineering analyses for ARINC's external customers. The company's previous supercomputer also remains available. Read further...
Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute in California and the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology have developed a "biological computer" made entirely from biomolecules that is capable of deciphering images encrypted on DNA chips. Although DNA has been used for encryption in the past, this is the first experimental demonstration of a molecular cryptosystem of images based on DNA computing. The study was published in a recent online-before-print edition of the journalAngewandte Chemie. Read further...
With SSD caching, the most frequently used data is stored on solid state memory placed between the system memory and hard drives. Because SSDs use no spinning disks and robotic arms, the storing and retrieving of data is accomplished with virtually no latency, speeding data access by orders of magnitude. In addition to the superior performance, SSD cache requires no separate tier to manage. Read further...
