Distributed computing has grown more and more important because of the increasing needs of applications, in terms of computing power and storage capacity, along with the expansion of Cloud Computing. For several years, distributed computing was reserved to computer scientists who developed ad-hoc solutions to manage and address the computing power of grid platforms. The development of several pieces of middleware made it easier to access production grids (and now cloud infrastructures) across the world and allowed easier access to complex applications. The EMEA server market displayed flat growth in 3Q11, with revenue of $3.2 billion, up 0.6% annually and 546,883 units shipped, 1.0% less than in the same quarter last year. Revenue performance in the Western European subregion was below the EMEA average, with server sales down 1.4% annually. This was reflected in a shrinking Western European revenue share of the overall EMEA server market, which generated 74.8% of total sales, the smallest percentage since IDC records began. IDC believes that the current fluctuations of the exchange rate as the euro devaluates in the currency markets and more specifically against the dollar had a significant effect on server system revenue in Western Europe. The work is being done under a $1.5 million grant from the Intel Corporation. Read further...
Computer scientists at UC San Diego, who set out to simulate all rainbows found in nature, wound up answering questions about the physics of rainbows as well. The scientists recreated a wide variety of rainbows - primary rainbows, secondary rainbows, redbows that form at sunset and cloudbows that form on foggy days - by using an improved method for simulating how light interacts with water drops of various shapes and sizes. Their new approach even yielded realistic simulations of difficult-to-replicate "twinned" rainbows that split their primary bow in two. Read further...
