Researchers from Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB) have found a massive security gap at Amazon Cloud Services. Using different methods of attack - signature wrapping and cross site scripting - they tested the system which was deemed "safe". "Based on our research results, Amazon confirmed the security gaps and closed them immediately", stated Prof. Dr. Jörg Schwenk, chair for network and data security at the RUB. Amazon Webservices (AWS) offers its customers Cloud computing services and hosts, among others, services like Twitter, Second Life and 4Square. Read further...
After years in the works and 15 drafts, the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) working definition of Cloud computing, the 16th and final definition has been published as "The NIST Definition of Cloud Computing" (NIST Special Publication 800-145). Read further...
At Citrix Synergy, Citrix has introduced the next stage of its strategy for Citrix CloudGateway, the industry’s first unified service broker that aggregates, controls and delivers Windows, web, SaaS and mobile apps to any user on any device. The CloudGateway product line empowers end users with self-service access to all of their business apps, and gives IT unmatched control over apps and data from public cloud environments, accelerating enterprise adoption of Cloud and mobility. SARA and BiG Grid organized a festive launch of the new HPC Cloud infrastructure on October 4, 2011. The event was attended by approximately 150 people. At the SARA/BIG Grid HPC-Cloud day, Anwar Osseyran proposed sector CLouds as a solution for many of the problems that plague Cloud computing today, such as lack of security and legal issues. In, for instance, an HPC Educational sector Cloud, institutes can share their capacity with trusted organisations, thus reducing overcapacity which also benefits the environment. Read further...
The Board of the OpenMP Architecture Review Board (ARB) has appointed Michael Wong of IBM Canada as the new CEO of the OpenMP organisation. He succeeds outgoing CEO Larry Meadows of Intel. In addition, Matthijs van Waveren has been appointed as Marketing Co-ordinator. Read further...
The PRACE Research Infrastructure featured, in the third PRACE regular call, a new system codenamed HERMIT that is installed at HLRS, Stuttgart provided by the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing in Germany. In addition to this, the Thin Node partition of CURIE made available by GENCI and operated at CEA, Bruyères-Le-Châtel, France was included, adding capability to the PRACE Research Infrastructure (RI). HERMIT is the third Tier-0 system in the PRACE RI after JUGENE (GCS) and CURIE (GENCI). The number of PRACE systems will continue to grow and provide more capacity and services to the European communities. Read further...
PRACE, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe, is organizing a workshop on utilizing Tier-1 HPC systems on 29-30 November 2011 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The aim of the workshop is to support researchers granted compute resources through the recent DECI-7 call as well as other potential users of the pan-European Tier-1 infrastructure. Read further...

Grid Dynamics has launched a new solution, DevOps Catalyst, an integrated product and services offering designed to address the need of modern enterprises to release code to production in a fast, repeatable and reliable manner. Read further...
SGI has established a new world record performance benchmark for Terasort data processing and analysis using Apache Hadoop clusters running on Cloudera's Distribution Including Apache Hadoop (CDH). The company, which recently joined the Cloudera Connect Partner Programme, has also formed a distribution relationship with Cloudera that will allow it to build, sell and deploy commercial solutions based on and around Hadoop. Read further...
Cloudera Inc., a provider of Apache Hadoop-based data management software and services, and SGI, a trusted expert in technical computing, have signed an agreement for SGI to distribute Cloudera software pre-installed on SGI Hadoop Clusters. Read further...
IBM has introduced new software for the health care industry to help health care providers and payers improve patient care and reduce costs. The new software offering uses content analytics similar to what is found in IBM's Watson technology. Read further...
A new analysis of images from the Hubble Space Telescope combined with supercomputer simulations of galaxy collisions has cleared up years of confusion about the rate at which smaller galaxies merge to form bigger ones. The analysis reveals that the merger rate of galaxies over the last 8 billion to 9 billion years falls between the previous estimates. This paper, led by Jennifer Lotz of Space Telescope Science Institute, is about to be published in theAstrophysical Journal. Read further...
Whamcloud formed from a worldwide network of high-performance computing (HPC) storage industry veterans, has signed a Lustre support contract with the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division at NASA's Ames Research Center. Lustre, the massively parallel open source file system, is used extensively within NAS. NASA Ames has over $3.0 billion in capital equipment, 2,300 research personnel and a $600 million annual budget and plays a critical role in virtually all NASA missions in support of America's space and aeronautics programmes. The contract is for up to five years of Lustre support. Read further...
If quantum computers are ever to be realized, they likely will be made of different types of parts that will need to share information with one another, just like the memory and logic circuits in today's computers do. However, prospects for achieving this kind of communication seemed distant - until now. A team of physicists working at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has shown for the first time how these parts might communicate effectively. Read further...
Idemitsu Petroleum Norge (IPN) has added HP storage solutions to its Converged Infrastructure to manage and protect its data for uninterrupted business continuity. Part of the Idemitsu Group, one of Japan's largest energy corporations, IPN's main activities are the exploration, development and production of oil and natural gas in Norway. To support its growing business, IPN has standardized on an HP Converged Infrastructure utilizing HP BladeSystem and HP ProLiant servers, storage and networking switches. Read further...
Targetbase, a data-driven marketing agency, now delivers a higher level of service at a lower total cost of ownership since migrating to the Oracle Exadata Database Machine. In March 2010, the agency moved its multi-terabyte data warehouse to Oracle Exadata Database Machine to support clients' growing real-time information and analysis demands. Read further...
Building on earlier work showing how nanowires carved in impurity-laden diamond crystal can efficiently emit individual photons, researchers have developed a scalable manufacturing process to craft arrays of miniature, silver-plated-diamond posts that enable even greater photon control. The development supports efforts to create robust, room-temperature quantum computers by setting the stage for diamond-based microchips. Additionally, the technology could support new tools capable of measuring magnetic fields at the nanometer scale. Read further...
IBM has launched a new network intelligence analytics appliance to help communications services providers (CSPs) analyze up to petabytes of customer and network data in minutes.
