EMC Corporation's new 450,000 square foot Center of Excellence (COE) in Durham, North Carolina will deliver on and demonstrate the promise of Cloud computing and IT as a Service (ITaaS) for EMC and its customers. A community computing science initiative to help discover the hidden Universe was officially launched at Curtin University by Western Australia's Minister for Science and Innovation, the Hon. John Day. TheSkyNet project, sponsored by the WA Department of Commerce and developed by the International Centre for Radio Astronomy (ICRAR), in conjunction with UK-based computing company, eMedia Track, will allow members of the public to contribute their spare computing power to the processing of radio astronomy data. IBM and University of Antioquia's Tropical Disease Study and Control Programme (PECET) have launched a joint research project, Drug Search for Leishmaniasis, using computer power from IBM's World Community Grid. World Community Grid pools and uses the idle computing power of volunteers' personal computers around the world to help accelerate scientific research that addresses humanitarian challenges. The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputacion (BSC-CNS) now has a new cluster with graphical accelerators which will be used to consolidate its research in programming models, tool development and application porting. This new Bull system, based on bullx nodes, each equipped with Intel processors and NVIDIA GPUs, would be ranked 90 in the world in the June 2011 Top500 list and has a peak performance of 186 Teraflops. This cluster doubles MareNostrum's calculation capacity, consumes seven times less power and occupies 13 times less space. The combination of this new machine and the current MareNostrum system means that the public consortium has tripled the supercomputing resources provided to the Spanish scientific community. ADVA Optical Networking has launched its 100G Metro solution designed specifically to address the continued fierce bandwidth growth in the metro environment. The new solution is a response to the demands of service providers and enterprises for efficient 100Gbit/s data transport across distances of up to 500km. Fully integrated into the ADVA FSP 3000, the 100G Metro solution increases the capacity of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) networks while lowering cost and reducing space and power consumption. Under the agreement, WellPoint will develop and launch Watson-based solutions to help improve patient care through the delivery of up-to-date, evidence-based health care for millions of Americans. The signature spiral arms of the Milky Way galaxy were likely formed by an epic collision between the Milky Way and the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy, according to a University of Pittsburgh researcher and his collaborators, published in the prestigious British journalNature. Supercomputer simulations by Christopher W. Purcell, postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in Pitt's School of Arts and Sciences, and colleagues report their findings in a paper titled "The Sagittarius Impact as an Architect of Spirality and Outer Rings in the Milky Way".
