IBM is broadening its Power architecture licensing programme to include for the first time, a multi-use agreement that gives developers access to the entire line-up of Power cores with a single license. Designers can now gain access to a blanket license for unlimited uses of the Power 470, Power 460 and Power 405 cores for a five-year period. IBM also announced a new "no-barriers" license for the Power 405 core which drops the standard access fee. Read further...
Jeopardy! will broadcast an encore presentation of the first-ever man vs. machine Jeopardy! competition between IBM's "Watson" computing system and the show's two greatest contestants - Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Millions of North American viewers will be able to again witness TV history as Watson successfully competes against two human champions in two matches played over three consecutive days. After nine months of number-crunching on a powerful supercomputer, a beautiful spiral galaxy matching our own Milky Way emerged from a computer simulation of the physics involved in galaxy formation and evolution. The simulation by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Zurich solves a longstanding problem that had led some to question the prevailing cosmological model of the universe. Read further...
Thanks to advances in experimental design, physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have achieved a record-low probability of error in quantum information processing with a single quantum bit (qubit) - the first published error rate small enough to meet theoretical requirements for building viable quantum computers. Read further...
Mr Nick Jones from the University of Auckland has been appointed Director of the New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI), a nation-wide supercomputer network designed to support cutting-edge research. High-performance computing has become indispensable to scientists around the world as they tackle increasingly complex and data-intensive research questions. NeSI will provide New Zealand researchers with the computing capability, data storage and expert technical support they require to continue competing on the world stage. Read further...
A supernova discovered yesterday is closer to Earth - approximately 21 million light-years away - than any other of its kind in a generation. Astronomers believe they caught the supernova within hours of its explosion, a rare feat made possible with a specialized survey telescope and state-of-the-art computational tools. The finding of such a supernova so early and so close has energized the astronomical community as they are scrambling to observe it with as many telescopes as possible, including the Hubble Space Telescope.
