PROSPECT, an open European association of leading suppliers and users of supercomputers from industry and academia, starts a European Technology Platform for High Performance Computing. Its aim is to help Europe realise the highly promising economic, scientific and societal benefits of High Performance Computing (HPC). The Technology Platform will define research priorities for European HPC in the form of a Strategic Research Agenda submitted to the Commission and will help ensure that public investment in HPC delivers the widest possible benefit to European business and society. Acer plans to acquire US-based iGware, a Cloud technology company, for US$320 million plus another US$75 million for performance-based earn-out. With the objective of mid- to long-term investment, Acer will leverage iGware's proven technology to establish its own Cloud infrastructure, called Acer Cloud, to serve and benefit Acer customers, and enhance brand value. The company's innovative CloudStack product line helps providers of all types deploy and manage simple, cost-effective Cloud services that are scalable, secure, and open by design. The 8th International Desktop Grid Federation (IDGF) Workshop will be held August 17, 2011, 14h - 18h in Hannover, Germany. This workshop is organized by the International Desktop Grid Federation and by SZTAKI for the European chapter. It is co-located with the 7th BOINC Workshop that will take place on August 18 - 19. This workshop is focused around the Desktop Grids for eScience Roadmap - a new version has just been published - and a panel session on issues and opportunities in Desktop Grids. The workshop will provide a platform for scientific users, Desktop Grid operators, system administrators and application developers to exchange experiences about Desktop Grids and related technology.
