The Cameroon Ministry of Finance has turned to IBM and CFAO Technologies, an IBM Business Partner in West Africa, to help modernize the payroll processes for government employees in the country. The new system, based on IBM mainframe and storage technologies, will help to increase the security of the Ministry's payroll system and improve the efficiency of processes such as generating pay slips. Microsoft Corp. has released its global "SMB Cloud Adoption Study 2011", which investigates how Cloud computing will impact small and midsize businesses (SMBs, SMEs) in the next three years. The research finds that 39 percent of SMEs expect to be paying for one or more Cloud services within three years, an increase of 34 percent from the current 29 percent. Red Hat Inc., a provider of open source solutions, has announced financial results for its fiscal fourth quarter and fiscal year ended February 28, 2011. Total revenue for the quarter was $244.8 million, an increase of 25% from the year ago quarter. Subscription revenue for the quarter was $209.3 million, up 24% year-over-year. For the full year, total revenue was $909.3 million, an increase of 22% over the prior year, and subscription revenue was $773.4 million, up 21% year-over-year. Read further...
A new study led by a researcher at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California, San Diego, shows that icebergs drifting in the Antarctic's Southern Ocean play a key role in the carbon cycle process, and influence surface waters and mixing more than previously thought. The results of the study, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), appear in the journalDeep-Sea Research IIin a paper titled "Cooling, Dilution and Mixing of Ocean Water by Free-drifting Icebergs in the Weddell Sea". A novel supercomputing resource created by researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center at the University of California, San Diego, is allowing scientists to study evolutionary relationships among large populations of living things in significantly shorter times - and without having to understand how to operate large, complex computer systems. The new resource, called the CIPRES - Cyberinfrastructure for Phylogenetic RESearch - Gateway, is an Internet portal that allows scientists anywhere in the world to upload their data via a standard Web browser and perform phylogenetic analyses. The most time-consuming analyses use supercomputers, such as SDSC's new Trestles system, that are part of the National Science Foundation's TeraGrid, the world's most powerful collection of high-performance computing resources dedicated to academic research. New technology advancements available in a digital infrastructure, such as Cloud computing and social computing, are transforming manufacturing industry value chains, according to a Microsoft Corp. survey released at Hannover Messe 2011 in Hannover, Germany. The survey results revealed a need to better integrate collaboration tools with business systems (47.4 percent) and to improve access to unstructured data and processes (36.2 percent). University of Texas at Austin President William Powers Jr., Michael Dell, Dr. Jay Boisseau and Dr. Karl Schulz will dedicate Lonestar 4, the newest supercomputer at The University of Texas at Austin. The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in the United Kingdom has selected two SGI Altix UV 1000 systems to rapidly solve large memory engineering problems. AWE is responsible for manufacturing and maintaining the warheads for the UK's nuclear deterrent, Trident. The EDGI project team will organize a joint DCI Summer School with EMI, IGE, EGI-Inspire, StratusLab and DEGISCO in Budapest between 11-16 July 2011. The subject of the summer school is to give insights to the technologies provided by the EMI, IGE, EDGI and StratusLab projects. Based on the EGI-InSPIRE and DEGISCO project experiences the school will also address the issues of how to organize production infrastructures based on these technologies, how to port applications for such infrastructures and how to support users of these infrastructures. At the EGI User Forum, held in Vilnius, Lithuania, the EDGI project for the first time demonstrated a brand new feature. The feature is called the MetaJob mechanism by which users are enabled to submit jobs to the EDGI Desktop Grid through gLite using one single submit command in the range of thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs or even more. The Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (CEA), appointed by Fusion for Energy (F4E), the EU organisation managing Europe's contribution to ITER, has selected Bull to provide, maintain and operate the computer which is to be installed at Rokkasho, Japan, at the International Fusion Energy Research Center (IFERC). This computer is intended to allow the most advanced modelling and simulation in the field of plasmas and controlled fusion equipment. It will be available to European and Japanese researchers for a period of five years from January 2012. The supercomputer is an important milestone of Europe's contribution to the Broader Approach (BA), an Agreement signed between Europe and Japan to complement the ITER project through various R&D activities which are developed in the field of nuclear fusion.
