Focus on Europe

When it comes to computing power, the USA and China are head of the pack. But when it comes to developing innovative supercomputer architectures, Europe has the lead. A prime example of this is the new supercomputer that is due to start user operation at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) in the next few days. JUWELS is a milestone on the road to a new generation of ultraflexible modular supercomputers targeting a broader range of tasks - from Big Data applications right up to compute-intensive simulations. With its first module alone, JUWELS qualified as the best German computer for the TOP500 List of the fastest supercomputers in the world. The system is being financed and utilized within the framework of the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing, which is funded by the federal government and the states in which the centre is located. E4 Computer Engineering, teaming up with Cavium, will promote and sustain the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) team at the Student Cluster Competition 2018, which takes place on June 24th-28th in Frankfurt, Germany at ISC18. Read further...
The EU Council has agreed to give a boost to a high-performance computing ecosystem by establishing a new European joint undertaking the EuroHPC JU. The joint undertaking will oversee the pooling of resources within Europe to develop supercomputers for processing Big Data, which is essential for addressing current major scientific and societal challenges. The establishment of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking by the Coucil is that last step in the legal and political process. The European Parliament will vote on this proposal in July, before the Regulation is formally adopted by the Council of the EU. Next the EuroHP JU will be formed according to this legislation and start operating in about half a year from now. Read further...
The first keynote speaker at ISC'18 in Frankfurt, Germany, was Maria Girone, CTO at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland. She talked about the challenges that are coming up for CERN in the next decade and the way these are being tackled already today with the newest technologies, including machine learning, artificial intelligence, advanced simulation, HPC, and quantum computing. InfiniBand accelerates the new supercomputer at Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany. JUWELS, the new system, delivers twelve petaflop of peak performance and is interconnected by EDR 100G InfiniBand, with a planned partial upgrade to HDR 200G InfiniBand later in 2018. The JUWELS supercomputer, which is scheduled for further extension in late 2019, is operated by Jülich Supercomputing Centre as a member of the Gauss Center for Supercomputing (GCS), the alliance of the three German national supercomputing centres, providing computing power to German and European users. InfiniBand's high-speed data throughput and smart In-Network Computing engines help the Jülich supercomputer to meet the diverse requirements of its user communities in a most effective and cost-efficient way.
