Quantum computing

A SEK 1 billion research initiative is setting Sweden on course to a global top position in quantum technology. The focus is on developing a quantum computer with much greater computing power than the best supercomputers of today. The initiative, which is headed up by Professor Per Delsing at Chalmers University of Technology, has been made possible by an anniversary donation of SEK 600 million from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. Focus on Europe

A figurehead of Forschungszentrum Jülich retires in the spring of 2018: JUQUEEN, Europe's fastest supercomputer for many years, will meet its successor. Forschungszentrum Jülich and the international IT company Atos have agreed at the SC17 supercomputing conference currently taking place in Denver, USA, to install the first module of the system. The third partner is the Munich-based software company ParTec. The new system is to be operated as a national high-performance computer within the framework of the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS), to which the three data centres of the Jülich Research Centre (JSC), the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (LRZ) and Stuttgart University (HLRS) belong. GCS and its supercomputers are jointly supported and financed by the federal government and the three states in which GCS is headquartered. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Summit supercomputer, which is anticipated to become the world's fastest supercomputer, is on target for completion in early 2018. The University of Tennessee, Chattanooga (UTC) has selected DDN's GS14KX parallel file system appliance with 1.1PB of storage to replace its aging Big Data storage system and to support a diversifying range of data-intensive research projects. The Center of Excellence in Applied Computational Science and Engineering (SimCenter) at UTC needed a Big Data storage solution that could scale easily to support growing research programs focused on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), machine learning, data analytics, smart cities and molecular biology. At SuperComputing 2017 (SC17), Huawei has unveiled the new-generation FusionServer V5 4-socket high-performance server line-up, including the FusionServer 2488 V5 2U 4-socket rack server and the FusionServer CH242 V5 full-width 4-socket blade. Compared with traditional HPC solutions based on 2-socket servers, the HPC solution based on Huawei FusionServer V5 4-socket servers could significantly reduce the server node quantity per cluster, which results in cluster cables reduction by 50% and total energy consumption reduction by 10%, offering deployment options with better economics for customers. Asetek has received a new order from existing OEM partner Fujitsu for the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). The order for Asetek RackCDU D2C (Direct-to-Chip) liquid cooling will be used at the AI Bridging Cloud Infrastructure (ABCI) cluster, set to become the fastest supercomputer system in Japan. Applications

Just before 8:00 a.m. local time on December 26, 2004, people in southeast Asia were starting their days when the third strongest recorded earthquake in history ripped a 1,500-kilometer tear in the ocean floor off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The earthquake lasted between 8 and 10 minutes - one of the longest ever recorded, and lifted the ocean floor several meters, creating a tsunami with 30-meter waves that devastated whole communities. The event caused nearly 200,000 deaths across 15 countries, and released as much energy above and below ground as multiple centuries of US energy usage. Read further...

At the Supercomputing Conference 2017, E4 Computer Engineering announced that D.A.V.I.D.E. - Development of an Added Value Infrastructure Designed in Europe - entered for the second time the prestigious TOP500 and Green500 lists, ranking respectively position #440 and #18. D.A.V.I.D.E., a multi-node cluster based on IBM POWER8 servers and NVIDIA Tesla P100 data centre GPUs, features two relevant innovations that enhance whole system capabilities in terms of performance and energy-efficiency. NEC Deutschland GmbH has delivered an LX series supercomputer to Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), one of Germany's leading research universities and part of the German Gauss Alliance consortium of excellence in high-performance computing (HPC). The new HPC cluster ranks 65th in the most current TOP500 list of the fastest supercomputers in the world from November 2017 and 51st in the Green500 list of the most energy-efficient supercomputers.
