Exascale

Mellanox Technologies has signed a joint technology collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to architect, design and explore technologies for future Exascale platforms. The agreement will explore the advanced capabilities of Mellanox interconnect technology while focusing on a new generation of in-network computing architecture and the laboratory application requirements. This collaboration will also enable the DOE lab, through its Center for Advanced Technology Evaluation - known as CENATE, and Mellanox to effectively explore new software and hardware synergies that can drive high performance computing to the next level. Allinea's software is to be used in a next-generation supercomputer system being built by Fujitsu Limited for the Joint Center for Advanced High Performance Computing (JCAHPC) in Japan. Fujitsu selected Allinea's high performance software development tools and its industry leading powerful parallel debugger, Allinea DDT, which will aid the development of advanced scale scientific software for the new supercomputer. Once live in December 2016, the new supercomputer, known as Oakforest-PACS, will be the fastest supercomputer system in Japan to date, delivering 25 PFLOPS on Intel's Xeon Phi (Knights Landing) manycore processors and Omni-Path architecture. The Mellanox HPC-X Scalable Framework is a comprehensive software suite that includes the Message Passing Interface (MPI), Shared Memory (SHMEM) and Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) communications libraries for high-performance computing environments, and provides enhancements to significantly increase the scalability and performance of message communications in the network. To meet the unprecedented computational demands placed on modern data centres, NVIDIA has introduced the NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU accelerator for PCIe servers, which delivers massive leaps in performance and value compared with CPU-based systems. Demand for supercomputing cycles is higher than ever. The majority of scientists are unable to secure adequate time on supercomputing systems to conduct their research, based on National Science Foundation data. For the past year, staff at the Department of Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) have been preparing users of 20 leading science applications for the arrival of the second phase of its newest supercomputer, Cori, which consists of more than 9,300 nodes containing Intel's Xeon Phi Knights Landing processor - which was officially unveiled June 20 at the International Supercomputer Conference in Germany. The University of Tokyo has chosen SGI, through a competitive bid, to perform advanced data analysis and simulation within its Information Technology Center. The centre is one of Japan's major research and educational institutions for building, applying, and utilizing large computer systems. The new SGI system will be in operation beginning July 1, 2016. When physicists Georg Bednorz and K. Alex Muller discovered the first high-temperature superconductors in 1986, it didn't take much imagination to envision the potential technological benefits of harnessing such materials. High-temperature superconductors are materials that can transport electricity with perfect efficiency at or near liquid nitrogen temperatures (-196 degrees Celsius). Though their operating temperature may seem cold, they're a summer afternoon in the tropics compared to their previously known brethren, so-called conventional superconductors, which operate at temperatures near absolute zero (-273.15 degrees Celsius). The Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer is the first system in the world that has a peak performance of over 100 PFlops. It is a complete homegrown supercomputer, and is operated by the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi (NSCC-Wuxi). As the world's fastest supercomputer, it contributes largely to research fields such as earth system modeling, ocean surface wave modeling, atomistic simulation, and phase-field simulation. Three of the applications have managed to scale to the full system, and have been nominated as the finalists for the Gordon Bell award of 2016, which is the highest honour in the domain of high performance computing applications. Oracle and Mellanox have signed a partnership to drive interoperability between their products and to jointly develop further industry standards for InfiniBand - a high speed Cloud networking technology. Products supporting the InfiniBand standard not only provide extreme bandwidth and ultra-low latency for fast, agile, and secure Cloud infrastructure, but they are also based upon industry standards and available from multiple vendors. Oracle and Mellanox Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) 100G InfiniBand products are engineered to the InfiniBand Architecture Specification Release 1.3 and allow customers to deploy a 100Gb/s fabric that is backwards compatible with the previous generations of InfiniBand-based systems (FDR, QDR, DDR, and SDR), enabling customers to protect their investments in InfiniBand-enabled applications. Huawei, ranked 228th on the Global Fortune 500 based on its revenue in 2014, is a global information and communications technology (ICT) solution provider. Bright published a partnership agreement with Huawei in 2014. Since then, the two companies have been working together to provide Huawei customers with enhanced HPC management solutions.
