In the opening session at the ISC'14 Conference in Leipzig, Germany, Horst Gietl from Prometeus made a fine and moving tribute to ISC Founder Hans Meuer. It is the merit of this remarkable man that today, 2500 participants are gathering for the 29th edition of the International Supercomputing Conference. Read further...
Thomas and Martin Meuer officially opened the ISC'14 Conference in Leipzig, Germany, strictly on time. This ISC edition is the first one without the cordial presence of their father, Hans Meuer, but Thomas and Martin Meuer are determined to faithfully continue his legacy. They have prepared a rich programme with 27 invited sessions, 35 research papers, 38 posters, 20 BoFs sessions, and 156 exhibitors. This proves that ISC'14 is fully alive and kicking. The first keynote speaker at ISC'14 in Leipzig, Germany was Klaus Schulten from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His topic was the role of the computer in the life sciences as a computational microscope for the simulation of biological samples. He showed the audience a wide range of fascinating examples of supercomputing use for the visualization of the working of cells and proteins and expanded on the achievements of his team in the steps taken towards better cancer, antibiotic, and HIV drug development. For the third consecutive time, Tianhe-2, a supercomputer developed by China's National University of Defense Technology, has retained its position as the world's no. 1 system with a performance of 33.86 petaflop/s (quadrillions of calculations per second) on the Linpack benchmark, according to the 43rd edition of the twice-yearly TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers. Read further...
Again, Erich Strohmaier from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, presented an excellent analysis of the 43rd TOP500 list of fastest supercomputers in the world, newly issued at the International Supercomputing Conference 2014 in Leipzig, Germany. He applied the Gini coefficient to measure the statistical dispersion intended to represent inequality to the TOP500 list and came to the conclusion that the distribution of system sizes is much more asymmetric than it used to be. All first 6 systems in the TOP500 list are very large. This is new for the last two years. The medium systems are getting smaller though. Read further...
