The InfiniBand Trade Association has updated its InfiniBand roadmap, showing current and projected link speeds for the technology from 2010 through 2011 and beyond. The roadmap shows 4x EDR ports at 100Gb/s data rate in 2011 (25Gb/s per lane); the IBTA's previous roadmap, published in June 2008, had projected 4x EDR at less than 80Gb/s data rate in 2011. The IBTA also announced that, according to the June 2010 list, InfiniBand is now deployed in 208 systems of the TOP500 supercomputer sites - an increase of 37 percent from one year ago. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Konrad Zuse, the ISC'10 team organized a session on the history of computing, chaired by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Karl and Prof. Dr. Klaus Waldschmidt. Prof. Dr. Karl from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology dedicated a short introduction to the key features of the Z3, developed by Konrad Zuse, who would have become 100 years old on June 22nd 2010. Afterwards, Prof. Dr. Yale N. Patt, as the first speaker of this session, entertained the audience on the history of microarchitecture. Read further...

The Grid

Prof. Dr. Georg Carle from the Technische Universitaet Muenchen chaired the session on High Performance Computing and Networking. He introduced some of the current issues in this area to the audience. Networking is an important driving factor for HPC data centres. Recent advances amount to 40 Gbit/s with Infiniband and Ethernet. Innovative node concepts are also emerging, such as the OpenFlow switches. Prof. Dr. Carle also mentioned four types of delay that are challenging, being processing, queueing, transmission and propagation delays. Read further...

Mellanox Technologies Ltd.'s industry-leading end-to-end 40Gb/s InfiniBand connectivity products, including ConnectX-2 adapters and IS5600 switches with FabricIT fabric management software, provide the high-performance server and storage networking for Dawning's new supercomputer to be installed at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) in southern China. The new supercomputer, codenamed “Nebulae", is the fastest HPC system ever built in China, and is ranked as the second high-performing system in the world as publicized on the June 2010 TOP500 List of supercomputers with a sustainable Linpack benchmark performance of 1.271 Petaflops/s. Read further...
Mellanox's InfiniBand adapters and switch solutions demonstrated the highest growth on the TOP500 in the last two years. As reported in the 35th edition of the TOP500 list, the growth rate of Mellanox InfiniBand-connected systems represents more than 41 percent of the TOP500. Mellanox InfiniBand enables the highest system efficiency and utilization, up to 96 percent, and provides users with the best return on investment for their high-performance computing server and storage infrastructure computing requirements. The Military Applications Division (DAM) of the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) has installed next-generation LSI storage system technology in its Petaflop/s-scale data centre hosting the Tera 100 supercomputer. With theoretical processing power of 1.25 petaflops, Tera 100 is among the most powerful supercomputers ever designed and developed in Europe. Read further...
T-Platforms Group was chosen by the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies, Rusnano to lead the programme management and execution for a competitive solicitation that will provide collaborative funding and development support for at least 20 nanotechnology related computational tasks and 20 computational tasks from industrial production organisations. The industrial production tasks will be selected from specific industries targeted by this programme to include engineering in areas such as shipbuilding, aerospace, and automotive, oil and gas, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, energy and construction. The French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA: Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives) will utilize DataDirect Networks' (DDN) new Storage Fusion Architecture as the high-speed file storage foundation for its new Tera-100 supercomputer developed in partnership with Bull. To support the requirements of the Tera-100 system, the most powerful system ever designed and developed in Europe, CEA and Bull have selected DDN's new SFA10000 system to power the world's fastest POSIX file system and deliver over 300GB/s of single file system performance. Read further...
Bull has won the contract to provide the United Kingdom's Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) with two large scale capacity supercomputer systems, with a combined peak performance in excess of 75 Teraflops/s (trillions of calculations per second). The systems chosen are the latest bullx supercomputers launched by Bull last year, which are the first European-designed supercomputers to be totally dedicated to Extreme Computing. Read further...
Voltaire Ltd.'s switches provide the server-to-server or server-to-storage interconnect fabric for 55 percent of the InfiniBand deployments on the 35th edition of the TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers. This represents more than double the share of any other InfiniBand systems vendor. In addition, Voltaire switches are used in 33 new entries on the list since November 2009, bringing Voltaire's total count to 114. Read further...
The ecosystem surrounding the NVIDIA CUDA architecture for parallel processing got a significant boost with the establishment of new programmes to advance the field of general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU). With thousands of research papers already published, and more than 350 universities teaching CUDA, a figure that has tripled over the past year, these new programmes will expand the teaching and use of GPUs.
