Prof. Dr. Efthimios Kaxiras from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland opened the session on "High Performance Computational Life Sciences" at ISC'10 with a presentation on the use of HPC in the prediction of acute myocardial infarction. By investigating the status of the atherogenesis and atherosclerosis formation and evolution of plaques in heart patients, timely action can be taken to save lives. Read further...

In the TOP500, the global ranking of the world's fastest supercomputers published on 31 May, Juelich computers occupy top positions. JUGENE, Europe's fastest computer, holds the 5th place, and JUROPA/HPC-FF, the computer tandem developed in Juelich, is ranked 14th in the world and 3rd in Europe. QPACE (131st), also located at Juelich, continues to be the most energy-efficient supercomputer in the world. Read further...

ClusterVision has been selected to deliver the new flagship supercomputer of the Goethe University's Hessian high-performance computer organisation (HHLR-GU). This supercomputer called "LOEWE-CSC" has 20,784 processor cores plus 772 GPGPU hardware accelerators, which adds up to a theoretical peak performance of 599 TeraFlop/s (599 trillion calculations per second) in double precision and 2259 TeraFlop/s in single precision. NEC shows how its strategy is of enhancing application performance using less energy. At the 2010 International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) in Hamburg, Germany, Cray Inc. announced that Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology (KTH: Kungliga Tekniska Hoegskolan) is the latest organisation to order a Cray XT6m supercomputing system. KTH's PDC Center for High Performance Computing is acquiring a 93-teraflops Cray XT6m supercomputer as part of a national plan by the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) to provide Sweden's scientists with access to world-class high performance computing resources. SGI has developed a hybrid computing platform that could deliver a Petaflop/s of performance within a single cabinet. A Petaflop/s is defined as a thousand trillion floating point operations per second. SGI has shipped the first complete systems of Altix UV 1000, which are fully functional for use by its high performance computing (HPC) customers. Just before the opening of the ISC'10 Exhibition, members of the press were invited on a tour on the exhibition floor at supercomputing speed. Representatives of Microsoft, Intel, Supermicro, HP, Bull, and Mellanox grabbed their five minutes of glory. The HPC Advisory Council, an organisation for high-performance computing research, outreach and education, achieves the largest demonstration of the industry's fastest network during the ISC'10 conference in Hamburg, Germany. The 120Gb/s InfiniBand demonstration connects participating exhibitors on the ISC'10 showroom floor for demonstrating leading solutions and technologies for high-speed visualization. The demo sheds light on the 4500-year-old Khufu Pyramid mystery using a real-time, 3D simulation. A small cluster recreates the Kheops construction site, exactly as it was 4500 years ago. The demo merges real and virtual worlds via an interactive 3D experience on the ISC10 show floor. Read further...
