Exascale

Prof. Jack Dongarra recently gave a seminar on High Performance Computing (HPC) at DG CONNECT section of the European Commission. His slides are now available. He presents an overview of HPC with an emphasis on benchmarking and the future. Can we build an Exascale supercomputer today? Yes, Dongarra says. His recipe: Connect together 10 Sunway TaihuLight systems, power them with 150 MW, try to run 100 million threads in parallel, and put 2,7 billion USD on the table. But to make it practical and affordable some challenges have to be met. Read further...

Focus on Europe

Wolfgang Marquardt, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, wrote a guest blog on the EC web site titled "Paving the way for EuroHPC: A common effort to create a European supercomputing ecosystem". Europe has always been a leader in many aspects of supercomputing, in particular in computational science and engineering with an emphasis on software, algorithms, models, and applications, he writes. However, the strong European supercomputing community also faces a weak spot in the suite of technologies that make up an HPC ecosystem: the development and commercialization of domestic computer chips, processor technologies and computer systems. But Marquardt empahises that: "The roadmap towards a European HPC ecosystem with exascale capabilities should, however, not become dependent on the development of domestic technology." Read further...
