Chinese scientists from the CAS-Alibaba Quantum Computing Laboratory, University of Science and Technology of China, Shanghai together with scientists from Germany, Universitat Würzburg, and the UK, University of St Andrews have developed a photon based quantum computer that is 24.000 times faster than systems in previous experiments. To discuss the future of supercomputing in Europe, IBM recently invited Roberto Viola, Director-General of the European Commission's DG Connect, to the IBM research lab in Zurich. The lab is a concentration of researchers in the physical and mathematical sciences and computing. It was a great opportunity for IBM to discuss the company's vision for the EU’s HPC Strategy, and how to achieve a healthy HPC ecosystem in Europe. Read further...
The German Wissenschaftsrat (Science council) has listed the 15 million euro project for extending the Lichtenberg II supercomputer at TU Darmstad as "excellent". The machine is intended to be used for Computational Engineering, one of the focuse research areas of the university. The supercomputer will get funding from the federal governement and some countries (Länder). Read further...
