Sarah Yang explains in Berkeley "Science Shorts" how, using several spectroscopic techniques, scientists at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that the element berkelium breaks form with its heavy element peers by taking on an extra positive charge when bound to a synthetic organic molecule. NeIC runs and indepth story on how the Nordic countries set up an advanced, the most advanced in the world, storage facility and management infrastructure for managing data for the LHC collider from CERN. LHC produces enormous amounts of data. The current production amounts to hundreds of petabytes per year. This is expected to increase by 10 to 100 times in the near future. CERN has set up the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) to handle this. The WLCG is a global collaboration of more than 170 computing centres in 42 countries linking together national and international grid computing infrastructures. Read further...
