Cabot Partners published a White Paper, HPC and HPDA for the Cognitive Journey with OpenPOWER. It is an update to last year's Crossing the Performance CHASM with OpenPOWER White Paper. Cabot's latest analysis captures the progress and continuing momentum of the OpenPOWER Foundation and the evolution of its accelerated computing roadmap. In particular, Cabot finds the data-centric design of OpenPOWER systems to be uniquely suited to deliver convergence of HPC and Big Data Analytics across enterprise and research computing, coupled with the power of Deep Learning. The goal of the U.S. National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) is to maximize the benefits of High-Performance Computing (HPC) for economic competitiveness and scientific discovery. Security for HPC systems is essential for HPC systems to provide the anticipated benefits. The purpose of this workshop is to identify security priorities and principles that should be incorporated into the strategy of the NSCI, to bring together stakeholders from industry, academia, and Government, and also to identify gaps that should be addressed. EPCC was allowed access to Intel's early Knights Landing (KNL), Intel's new Xeon Phi processor cluster, through their collaboration project with Intel. Adrian Jackson reports on the EPCC blog. KNL is performing very well compared to IvyBridge, he says, but it is not performing as well as the Broadwell processors we have in our new EPCC system. Broadwell is a fairer comparison for KNL, as Broadwell is a similar generation processor to KNL. Broadwell is performing very well with a simple re-compile and run, and shows that there is scope for EPCC to do some optimisation work on the applications to get better performance on KNL. Quantum computing

The Los Alamos Magazine 1663 has an article on Quantum computing and the Quantum computer they have installed from D-Wave: the 2X system. There is already a short queue of scientists who want to run applications on the quantum computer. The system at Los Alamos is a specific type of quantum computer, called a quantum annealing computer. It is good for optimization problems. It's a six-page article you can download or read in an online reader. Read further...

Focus on Europe

Maria Virkkula has a nice report of the Summerschool in HPC in Finland. Seems like an interesting Summerschool in a marvelous environment. And the weather seemed good too. Read further...
