Applications

Equals 3 announced the launch of its cloud-based cognitive companion Lucy, powered by IBM Watson. Built for marketers and advertising/media agencies, Lucy's groundbreaking technology taps the cognitive computing power of Watson to address common challenges across research, segmentation and media planning. Lucy can inform everything from in-depth market analysis and audience segmentation to media mix modelling and targeted channel planning. Read further...
On the HPE blog, Bill Mannel notes that despite all of the recent advancements in medical science, heart disease remains the #1 cause of death among both men and women, representing one in every four deaths in the United States. If surgeons could leverage computer driven simulation to predict the success rates of new surgical procedures before ever picking up a scalpel - how many more medical devices would succeed if they could first be tested on virtual patients before application in the real world? Mannel sees HPC as key enabler of the highly realistic simulations that are driving improvements to patient care and treatment outcomes. Read further...
On the OCF blog, Andrew Dean shares some views on storage. He sees that in HPC temporary scratch storage there are a few prominent technologies (Spectrum Scale, previously known as GPFS, Lustre and increasingly BeeGFS) and all offer very good performance in a scratch storage environment. Dean says it is difficult to compare object storage and file systems directly as they are completely different technologies. He does not believe there is one clear winner in terms of storage technology. Read further...

Quantum computing

Moshe Rappoport of the IBM Research THINK Lab - Zurich, takes you in a video presentation into the world of quantum computing. He explains why the recent steps that scientists made in this field are very likely just the beginning of yet another quantum leap in the history of computing. Read further...
