ETP4HPC is an industry-led advisory group of companies and research centres involved in HPC including supercomputing and exascale technology research in Europe. ETP4HPC has released an update to the European High-Performance Computing (HPC) Technology Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) issued for the first time in 2013 by ETP4HPC. This SRA update will be followed by a full issue in 2017. The European Union is using the ETP4HPC agenda as a basis for their supercomputing research funding programme Read further...
EPCC developed Wee Archie: a portable, functional cluster to demonstrate applications and concepts relating to parallel systems. Wee Archie consists of 18 Raspberry Pi 2 Model B boards with three network switches housed in a custom design casing. Sixteen of these boards are for computation; the other two form a control and monitoring system. Each board has an associated LED matrix used to show live operational metrics. Read further...
Migiel de Vos describes the complex advanced network demonstration at SC15, the supercomputing conference in Austin, set up by University of Amsterdam, University of Groningen, NL e-Science Center, SURFsara and SURFnet. The demonstration focused on Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) combined with Service Function Chaining (SFC) through a programmable network (SDN). A user interface based on a web browser enabled visitors at the SURF booth, standing in front of a camera in Austin, to direct video traffic through Amsterdam using various random functions set up across Europe. Through the user interface, visitors sent API calls generated by the SFC to the OpenDayLight controller to programme the network. Read further...
