Supercomputers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) will be retrofitted with liquid cooling systems under a California Energy Commission (CEC) grant to assess potential energy savings. According to LLNL, Asetek has received a $3.5 million grant from the CEC for retrofits at two California HPC centers. A second yet-to-be-disclosed California data center also will be retrofitted under the grant next year. Energy savings and the associated cost reductions are critical to data centers and supercomputing facilities around the world, LLNL says. Read further...
On the Ciena website, Renee Reinke gives some insights in next gen networks at SC15. As a real-world example of the scale needed when connecting supercomputer resources Reinke mentions in the ESnet and NERSC announcement they had deployed a 400G network using Ciena's 6500 Packet-Optical Platform with the WaveLogic 3 Extreme chipset. The ESnet network, which connects tens of thousands of DOE Office of Science researchers at more than 40 U.S. laboratories and supercomputing facilities to research partners around the world, expects it will carry more than 60 petabytes of data per month by 2016.
