Hardware

David Black-Schaffer and Trevor Carlson from the Upssala University presented Understanding Performance on Next-Generation Multicores at the SICS software week in Sweden. Trevor Carlson is using and demonstrating live on stage the Adept model from the EC project ADEPT that can quickly profile processor performance. This tool is aimed to profile processors for exascale, but of course can also be used for today's processors. There is also a video interview with with Trevor Mudge, professor University of Michigan at the SICS Multicore Day on the same video channel. Read further...

Robert Roe surveys the processor market that underlies the next generation of HPC systems in Scientific Computing. He surveys, Open Power, ARM, FPGAs, INtel and more. He concludes: "The future of HPC is no longer a monoculture of clusters of commodity hardware but rather a highly diverse ecosystem, populated by different processor technologies, different architecture, and different software solutions. It may be messy, but it will be interesting." Read further...
