Greg Clifford blogs on the Cray web site about the Cray and ANSYS recently published applications brief on an aeroacoustics (wind noise) simulation on an Alfa Romeo Giulietta automobile. It's a very interesting example for many reasons, Clifford says, including that It demonstrated the technical partnership between Cray and ANSYS; It was a commercial production simulation, scaling to over 8,000 cores on the Cray XC40 supercomputer; It provided a good description of the source of vehicle noise and the challenge of reducing it. The SC15 site puts Victoria Stodden, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the spotlight. She will be presenting about reliability and reproducability at SC15. Ensuring reliability and reproducibility in computational research raises unique challenges in the supercomputing context. Specialized architectures, extensive and customized software, and complex workflows all raise barriers to transparency, while established concepts such as Validation, Verification, and Uncertainty Quantification point ways forward. Exascale

From 29th to 30th September 2015, the city of Rome will be the venue of a joint HPC workshop organised by the recently launched project titled European eXtreme Data and Computing Initiative (EXDCI). For the first time PRACE, ETP4HPC, the Centres of Excellence (CoE) and the FETHPC projects come together in a single event, the aim of which is to understand the working of and create a basis for the co-ordination of the entire European HPC ecosystem. Focus on Europe

The ICT 2015 event offers many possibilities to learn about latest HPC developments in Europe, about the EC European HPC strategy, and future funding opportunities in Horizon 2020. The ICT 2015 event in Lisbon (20-22 October) offers many activities over the three days: a conference programme, thematic sessions about the work programme 2016-2017, an exhibition area with more than 150 stands, and networking sessions. One session is organised by the ETP4HPC Association: "Changing gears. Target: Exa-scale - European High-Performance Computing", to present the progress of European HPC, the European HPC Technology Roadmap towards Exa-scale and to facilitate networking among the members of the European HPC Eco-system. In the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance, JARA, RWTH Aachen University and the Forschungszentrum Jülich are pooling their expertise in cutting-edge research, including simulations and HPC. At the fourth JARA-FORUM, researchers of JARA-HPC provide insight into the application possibilities and concepts of computer simulations and highly parallel algorithms. The keynote of the evening is delivered by Andreas von Bechtolsheim, a pioneer of computer science, founder of Sun Microsystems and one of the first investors in Google. The forum will be held in Berlin. Read further...
