SURFsara and the UvA are organising a course on HPC and Big Data in January 2016 in Amsterdam. The objective of the course is to enhance the accessibility of the HPC (High Performance Computing) facilities. The course is composed of a set of lectures covering various topics related to HPC and Big Data and a number of hands-on workshops and to develop practical skills.The course is designed to instruct students and researchers who are still unfamiliar with the use of the available HPC facilities or a number of its new components. John West from Texas Advanced Computing Center writes in a TOP500 blog that homogeneity of the HPC workforce and student populations today provides evidence that we are not, in fact, sampling broadly enough to be sure that we are building the best tools possible. But how homogeneous is it exactly? West designed a form, including questions: What is your gender?; What is your race and ethnicity?; What team are you on at TACC? handled the necessary red tape, and got anwsers. IBM published a video about the storage system implemented at the particle accelerator research centre DESY, the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron. DESY implemented a new IT architecture based on IBM Spectrum Scale and IBM Elastic Storage Server (ESS). The new system needs to handle more than 20 gigabyte per second at peak performance in order to enable scientists worldwide to gain faster insights into the atomic structure of novel semiconductors, catalysts, biological cells and other samples.
